TMG Scale  6.5
Starring Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline

TMG: Funny film. I am really getting to be a fan of Kutcher and his endearing personality. Natalie Portman leaves little not to like. However, this movie has to much “in your face” sex, vulgarity and trashiness.   Love and Other Drugs (2010) dealt with many of the same issues but did so in a much classier manner.

The final message may be good: It isn’t great sex that holds a good  relationship together. It is the heart strings, not the G-strings. The editors just failed to clean up the trash in this film in between. Don’t just take TMG’s word for it. Read what Joy Lynn has to say.

Joy Lynn: Do friends with benefits or bed buddies benefit both parties, or is there usually unexpected emotional discord? It depends on your definition of sex.  If sex means love and commitment “friends with benefits” sex will not work for you.

Casual sex may sound great in the beginning, but sex complicates things. What happens when the other person finds someone else? What about safe sex? What if jealously creeps in?  My guess is, friends with benefits sex doesn’t last long for most people.  It is human nature to want both emotional and physical connection with another person. If a person is only attracted to you by your physical beauty alone it is not good!

Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it does not take long before they realize they want more.

The first scene in this movie surprised me and made me feel a bit uncomfortable.  It really wasn’t funny and the music playing in the background  “I want to sex you up” pretty much sums up the movie. Be prepared for raunchy language. I felt like I was watching a “soft” porn flick until finally, the film turns sappy and I unexpectedly felt emotionally connected.   There are certainly some funny lines and scenes that will keep you entertained and make you laugh, but once again, this film is not for everyone.  ( I have been saying that a lot lately.)

Portman comes across well and believable in her character and Kutcher does a fine job playing his character, but the plot is inconsistent and silly.  Lake Bell’s (Lucy) character is a nice distraction.

This is a sexual romcom that fit’s today’s culture.  Be selective on who you might invite over to watch this flick on DVD.
